‘BEST SHORTS’ SCREENING OF ‘SICK’

‘SICK’, a short 15 minute film will be one of the Best Shorts screened at Battersea Power station this weekend. Winner of one of the tenth annual Wandsworth Film Awards, written by Mike Rymer and produced by local freelance producer Christine Hartland, the film was awarded development money from Wandsworth Film Office, on the strength of its script through Film London’s Borough Production Fund, which also allowed the team to pay for a professional script doctor who supported some redrafting.

The screening is an opportunity to celebrate local talent including the producer of ‘SICK’, Christine Hartland who lives locally in Clapham. Her previous films have played to a host of international festival audiences (including New York, San Francisco and Barcelona) and win several awards (including Best film in Miami and Best Direction at Strasbourg). It is great to see talent grown out of South west London being recognized and supported.

“Wandsworth Council was delighted to be involved with this successful project. Congratulations to Mike Rymer and his team for making such a well produced short film that engages the viewer on a difficult subject.” Jack Adam, Wandsworth Film Office

SICK’ is a powerful depiction of the mental health issues that effect many peoples lives. The experience of depression and alcoholism have left Brian’s daughter (Amanda) relying on him for her son’s welfare. When Brian’s wife dies and he gives the child into social care, Amanda’s world falls apart and she and her father don’t speak for 15 years. That is until she gathers the strength to visit him.

Hailed as ‘insightful’ by Mike Cobb from the Samaritans, the charity has fully supported the development of the film. “‘SICK’ is a challenging film, its very title is confronting for a start. It depicts a family dealing with loss and shows differing attitudes towards mental illness.” “It is a compelling and moving work that will resonate with its audiences.”
